マイアミ大学医学部のティファニー・フィールド教授は、小児マッサージを西洋医学の世界で初めて科学的に研究した人物です。1976年にマサチューセッツ大学で発達心理学を研究している際に娘さんを早産で出産し、自分の娘で実験し、マッサージが未熟児の発達を促すことを最初に研究して発表しました。
